What is your prefer implementation methodology , what I mean is not just using an excel file tracking the implementation but to use a full software life cycle tool which capture the complete Customer requirements study to the testing to the documentation to the implementation .I have attached an image which depict the system that i am setting it up for implementation of OpenERP Malaysia - InstantERP . When it is completed , it will be able to specify- Customer Initial project objectives- Document a System Requirements study (SRS) a

nd produce implementation progress documents easily ,- Capturing Use Case of OpenERP modules and potentially exploring of the feasibility of the new modules - Capturing the test and scenarios for each modules and each requirements which later to produce a proper sign off UAT (User Acceptance test)- a team review and discussion for Project issues and maintenance as well as enhancement tracking for EACH Task item.- all resource allocation (i.e. allocate developer to be responsible for the assigned modules or tasks )- a project management - produce impact analysis should requirements deviate from the original SRS. (this will should that when customer specify a requirement changes , it will in turn effect a use case of the OpenERP module screen with additional fields , original workflow to be modified or related sub system or integrated customized modules to be modified.and yes have i missed the link to introduce this product Enterprise Architect !

I do believe to have a successful implementation of OpenERP Malaysis( instantERP ) not only we need to have a good and experienced team but also to use a very good tool to manage the implementation , most SME aren't able to affort a failure as well as expensive proprietary management tools , as SME ourselves , E-Global SCM fully understand the cost concerns for all SME , therefore Tools that we select not only is cost effective but also most probably is one of the market leaders , just like how we spotted TinyERP , which is OpenERP at around 2002 .

The EA tool we have been using since version 3.5 , we have became as the reseller since 5 years ago and now EA has entered into Version 9.1 , when this article is writing , so now we are going to use our experiences to integrate EA with OpenERP (how to , when u consistently come back or you can follow us) , i promised i will share our knowledge gained in this blog this year and more article will be based on this implementation OpenERP Malaysia using EA .

A Vote for open source ERP

I have evaulated OpenBravo , WebERP , SQL-Ledger , compiere ,in fact the first opensource ERP that i came across was long time ago where I got so excited about opensource and i found Compiere and I could not believe that a full system can be offer for FREE !

As part of Malaysia and Singapore SME , i understand the pain of getting a good ERP , where when it comes to implement ERP solutions , it can daunting because of firstly is software adaptability in the SME growing dynamic and secondly is the Competency of the ERP consultation and implementation services that they will get , last but not least will be the company culture readiness and resources planned . ERP cannot be implemented like any off the shaft accounting packages , where mostly this off the shaft accounting packages cannot offer them a complete 360 degree management perspective.

As software developer , i always came across clients requesting , do you have ... accounting module , integrate with thier streamlined SME process and i have been always looking and testing various ERP platform that give us a possibilities to easily integrate the back end system , i always think of this , why reinvent the wheel ? Where there are so many good accounting software around ... We just need a good platform and perhaps a little bit more "Technical" , a good object oriented framework that is flexible and have good potential to grow , I have tested Compiere (look complicated) , OpenEPR Bravo (look nice but in term of flexibilities , i am not too sure...) , WebERP (look simple , in terms of framework and security , i am still in doubts ...) , SQL-Ledger (good and stable accounting package , but do we know Perl or do we want to learn Perl or simply get we get Perl programmer easily ?) , I came across TinyERP long time ago but because of Python ,Not another programming language ,at that time we already have Borland Delphi, PHP , Microsoft C# , VB , VB.net , so NO was my response but after getting hook up with the solutions with Google App Engine , Google cloud platform , i came to know that the one who started Python is with Google and Google support python and after all TinyERP( that was what OpenERP was called back in 2006 ) it was stright forward , install and then that is all ! it said it is flexible and have a lot of modules ... so I tried and like it and implement for our partner which now has fully acquired us "Chevon International Pte Ltd" , (Frankly speaking , i love Delphi , PHP , but when i come to use Python , i must say bravo our master sifu : Guido van Rossum , love it!)

Let see from the survey how many have tested other Open Source and have finally comes to openERP

When comes to Manufacturing , to integrate with CAD/CAM is a great combination for ERP solutions , we had our experiences in using Solid Edge and Team Center Express that export Bill of Material files and import those items into OpenERP , if you want to know what is it about , it is something like this youtube,

OpenERP Malaysia - Report manager engine

Besides the original OpenLab , OpenERP original reports engine require changes and modification of reports to be a skill python based developer or the recent released powerful webkit report engine which require you tohave a good command of HTML and knowledge of MAKO template before you can develop further for a more complicated report .

For Report designer , GUI based openERP Report engine used to be only available through Jasper Report , a JAVA based powerful BI tools , but to get Jasper Report works we will most likely require to install module or library which at least 80 ~ 100 MB , for us an old timer windows development from Borland Delphi , we are familiar with lots of good reporting tools , one of the report engine that we have been toying for openERP is "ReportMan" where it has a python based interface , you can find it here.

Since 4 years ago , we have started of with OpenERP (TinyERP) version 4 in Malaysia , we have been started to use it for our OpenERP custom reporting purposes , until lately , when there are more custom reports requirements , we are also in need to deploy into LINUX platform , this has challenge our skill to further develop this interface ,port it into a LINUX and MULTI-Company compatible.

We will be launching soon and you will get the modified version of openerp-6.0.3.X from our website so that you can leverage the GUI based reportman designer, we have no intention for competing with the rest of the powerful engine but simply because we are more familiar with this tools and hope to contribute back to the community.

These will let InstantERP , the Localized OpenERP Malaysia community to have more options in terms of customizing their reports.

OpenERP V6 is at Malaysia and I believe there are many SME are trying out ways to implement this ERP solutions into their business , we as an official partners for OpenERP also have not been stop learning , lately I threw myself into understanding the FULL architecture of OpenERP and really appreciate the original developer , Fabien and the gangs are really good ...

What make me excited about OpenERP is
1. It's work flow engine ( o , perhaps u do not know what i mean , i have ever one point in my life that i am so passionate towards BPM ,Business Process Management , from there learn so much about UML , Agile Methodology , Work flow engine and some of the good one such as intalio www.intalio.com/bpm was one of my favorite , and it is open source also ! Brilliant people )

It's Fully object orientated code (Yes a little about where i am from , i started to develop since 1993 and at one point ,i formed a company called "Com Object Solutions" , which i was so fascinated about providing business solution which is REUSABLE in a common platform ) but now seeing how OpenERP can do that it really excite me , how about you ?
4. Its Python ! (I must say , after been a faithful Delphi developer , these is one of the language that really have attracted me )

It is good that more Malaysian SME are trying out the OpenERP , initially , i feel a bit fearful as seems that most people can do it themselves so who will engage our services but after awhile , i started to realize after many contacts and leads that I have contacted , i need to be confident in what we can do and what services we can provide , times will tell who is REALLY GOOD , just like 4 years ago , when I selected OpenERP as my platform which it were still called TinyERP (a name that still sounds good and humble even up now when mentioned it , don't you think so, Fabien ? ) No body in these region wanted to look at TinyERP , mostly are focus on ADCOMPIERE , OpenBravo Java based ERP with integrated workflow engine... and certainly when you type "Opensource ERP" , TinyERP won't be showing up in the first page of Google , but today , you try and see whether OpenERP will pop up in the first page of Google search ...

From so many customized system that I have built , I will only say our technical knowledge and experiences in implementation will be paid off once we can established ourselves in the heart of growing SME (this is my wish and i am acting on it now!!!) that there is a group of genuine Technical competence OpenERP partner that can passionately help the SME who wishes to grow together as partner to SUCCESSFULLY implement the ERP system when SME focus on their business while we can offer our help to provide them COST EFFECTIVE solutions . One more time , I must stress again, OpenERP can be freely available but NOT our services . It is a genuine piece of ERP software that required experienced consultants or functional experts assistance or like any Proprietary ERP software if not carefully plan and implement it will be a wasting time and resources and when OpenERP software is FREE but the Professional fees are NOT CHEAP.

Just like any experienced and competence IT employees,i.e. project manager,IT manager, you want to employ , usually their salary is not CHEAP and considering the long term expenses that you need in your payroll or you employ some INCOMPETENCE / LACK OF EXPERIENCE company to help you to implement , I sincerely hope that OpenERP won't give you a feeling that lots of things it cannot do where system implementation failure occurs and please consider also all the time, human resources , project cost that you have been invested .

While the developer and tester are still working very hard on E-global Malaysia version of openERP which comes with Payroll and Localized Accounting module , I have began to try out to compile our own E-global flavor installer , trying out with XP , Vista , Windows 7 platform , source code build from Windows 7 and met some CTYPES error, Language error that caused by our windows Reporting engines that we used for our clients , initially with no success but after much trying ... the result is quite satisfying , here is the look of it ... come back and will update your more !

What project methodology you use to implement openERP ? I came from waterfall , the classic way to implement software from a detail upfront scope or requirements from customer , until I learn about SCRUM methodology , I had tried many agile style and believing the agile methodology can effective help us to understanding and collaborate with customer's business logic ,I did my research from RUP to a simplify form of RUP , ICONIX agile process and tried to apply them in my projects , I came across SCRUM , but I missed to really understand it until I found that openERP has SCRUM module, so in order to leverage on its functions , then we started to adopt SCRUM , let me tell you , it is fun ! And I am wandering how many of Malaysian company is really practicing SCRUM or we think we are practicing SCRM but we are recognized by experienced practitioner as SCRUMBUTT , check this out man!

We have successfully launched our SaaS offer for openERP in Amazon platform and are currently testing the reliabilities of the installation. We have installed both OpenERP V5 and V6 on separate server , so far so good , no body physically hurt or emotionally stressed !

For the better part of the last five years, software firm OpenERP has diligently worked to develop, introduce, offer, and popularize a new model for customer resource management (CRM) and enterprise resource management (ERP) enterprise software. By offering on-demand and on-premise versions of its open source solutions, the San Jose, Calif.-based company has helped put together a community of more than 900 developers who have helped make OpenERP a modular and recyclable software. OpenERP chief operating officer Marc Laporte recently discussed the value of open source enterprise software to manufacturers, the feedback his company as received in regard to the open source model, and whether or not open source software will continue to grow in popularity, in an interview with Manufacturing Business Technology.

MBT: Can you give me a little background on OpenERP and the open source model of enterprise software?
Laporte: The way we view the open source is a way to address some customers that currently cannot afford, or do not buy, ERP solutions, or do not buy business applications they need. And when we look at that, from our discussions with customers and past experience, there are (some) main things that those customers are experiencing. They find the traditional software is too expensive. They often find it is too rigid. You hear a lot of vendors talk about end-to-end process integration. And they are very right. That’s what in the end brings full value to an ERP. But they don’t want to throw away the whole system and build a new one.
When we looked at the market, we saw thay it was a market that needed solutions that were more affordable, that were more flexible, and that’s what we are aiming at building. The fact that we are open source means that there’s no license. And the beauty of it is that the customer will use his or her budget to customize the solution.
We can build applications that can be online or on-site. And it’s the very same application. We believe that this is very important because it gives the choice to the customer. Also, because we open-source, there’s no lock-in. People have a lock-in when they build there system with one vendor.
MBT: When you are talking to some of your customers and potential customers, what is some of the feedback you’ve received about the open source model?
Laporte: We see a fair amount of customers … that have been disappointed with other solutions on the market and want to have more control over their solution, and that’s why they try open source. They have access to the code. If they want to modify the software, because we have an open source model, they will be able to do it. We see a fair amount of companies that are willing to do that.
MBT: All of the developers working on a project like this, what kind of advantages does having that kind of collaboration have for the customer?
The more people that work on a software, the better that software is. I believe that everybody that has worked with a community for a publisher knows it is not always a comfortable task. I can tell you, the community is very demanding on us. They go through our code, they look through it, and there are a lot of debates about how we should do things. This really helps us build high-quality software.
We can’t hide anything. A premier vendor can hide (its) code and people just look at the functionalities. For us, we have people that look deep into our code and look at the way we’ve built it.
MBT: Do you feel the open source model will increase in popularity, given the economic situation many of your customers and potential customers face?
Laporte: I think so, and I can give you of a number of reasons for that. If you look really at what has happened for OpenERP in the last four months, we’ve extended our presence in 17 countries just over the past four months. There is really a lot of momentum going on now. I think there is a huge market opportunity because the market is ready for it. But there will only be a few vendors who will find the right recipe and have enough discipline and quality of execution to make it work.
MBT: Where is the development of this software headed in the short-term and long-term future?
Laporte: It’s all about having good software. If you have good software, people are going to download it, they’re going to enjoy it, and they’re going to turn to you. You’ll do business, and you’ll grow. If you don’t have good software, they’ll download it, they’ll see bad reviews, and they’ll drop it right away.

Python + GTK is the base for OpenERP and this project make it possible for the python to use the web cam to read the 2D datamatrix barcode!

So far web client was not been very stable and we have been using 5.0.1 and gtk client , we have tried to bring OpenERP to roadshow and has many inquiries , one of the most interesting inquires was someone is a CPA , Certified Public Accountant and came and challenge the ERP's accounting concept and he wanted to look at how OpenERP handle Perpecture account vs Periodic account , we had no idea of what he wanted but we believed that OpenERP can do it and after roadshow we did our R&D and fingure out how!

So far we are trying to integrate a windows based report engine using python so that we can have more options other than ReportLab / original rml/sxw pdf report generator. We had some page count and number of line printing control issues...

Hope to get it done by next week...

A new way is now open to inteface OpenERP

It is great that OpenERP recently has some great updates
and not only it has the possibility of windows , linux gtk based clients but with its webclient which originated from eTiny is also a powerful client for OpenERP.

The good things about OpenERP is that you write one logic at the server then the rest
of the UI will independent of the Server logic.

As I am from Delphi background where I have already modified the gtk client to call my custom
application built by Delphi but I have left only one more interface needed that is to also compatible with eTiny the OpenERP web client , I found out that I need to deal with basically javascript.

And after much digging for around 5 days , I finally got my solutions to call windows exe thru OpenERP WEB client. Now I am a happy man , coz my openerp project can both be gtk and webclient and are able to call the windows exe.

By the way I am using the multi-tier technologies to communicate with my application server
and it is FAST!!! .

There is still one more things that is how to do it in firefox ... where ActiveXObject is not available perhaps is to write a xpi , plugin for firefox ???

Well , at this moment I can ask my customer to temporary keep using IE until I find out how to throw IE into my "Recycle Bin"!

Implementing OpenERP is not a trivial task esp. on the part when it comes to

BOM and item code control
Inventory and understanding of the OpenERP double entry concept
Deploying in different platform , i.e. Linux Centos server and mixed with some customized windows multi-tier solutions for off-site data entry

But i must say that OpenERP is really flexible and able to cope with my customer's requirements and able to be customized upon requests. Right now we are implementing the AR/AP finance management . And the industries is Radiator and Heat Exchanger manufacturing.

Been almost a year , trying out different modules , to fit the ERP system into a Radiator manufacturing firm which have multi companies , location and branches , take into consideration of most situation , being coming from a window platform using Borland Delphi and PHP development environment , right now we have successfully integrate the

GTK client to interface with a custom made module by delphi in a multi-tier environment , which means that the server still in one location and GTK + Delphi Thin Client integration will communicate with Server.

About implementing d' OpenERP

After many months of testing , we have managed to customize the OpenERP to integrate with windows application , calling python to call local client application in gtk mode.

We have tested in centos 5 environment , as well as testing the win2003 64 bit server
and different kind of setting , environment as well as customization of the fields , customize of the python code , changing wizard , adding new form widget ...

And this is the place where we will share what we have learned in using and implementing
a live project for a radiator manufacturer .
